During my fourth year of teaching (2008), I had the absolute privilege of taking advantage of my school’s computer glitch: the scheduling system separated two classes by gender. As a result of this error, I ended up teaching 8th grade U.S. to the best group of young ladies a teacher could ask for. We laughed, we sang, we debated, and we cried together.
The following is the use of the Socratic method to correlate elements of the “Oregon Trail” computer game to the actual history of the mid-19th century U.S. movement westward (i.e. Manifest Destiny, poaching, communicable diseases, etc.).
